Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay earned his second pole position of the season by setting a track-record lap of 1:20.4312 during the third round of qualifying of the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300.
Following last year’s IndyCar champ in the second position on Sunday will be his Andretti teammate E.J. Viso. The second placing is a career high for the Venezuelan diver and he accomplished it with a time of 1:20.7380.
Last race’s P1 winner, Dario Franchitti, was the third highest qualifier this time around clocking in at 1:20.8922.
James Hinchcliffe of Oakville, Ont., was sixth in qualifying (1:20.9893) while Montreal’s Alex Tagliani was 15th (1:21.8636).

The 2.536, 11-turn temporary street circuit incorporates the Sambadrome parade ground as the frontstretch, a surface that’s particularly challenging as it’s the only section of the circuit that’s concrete.
There’s a long stretch that heads into the final right-hand corner, requiring hard braking and offers drivers plentiful overtaking opportunities.
