Blue Jays to part ways with Saltalamacchia, recall Maile

Blue Jays comeback, led by Kendrys Morales, falls short in the fifth inning as the Cardinals double down on the Jays in double-header.

The Toronto Blue Jays are parting ways with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and recalling Luke Maile from triple-A to serve as the backup to Russell Martin, industry sources told Sportsnet.

Right-hander Casey Lawrence, roughed up for six runs on 10 hits by the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, was optioned to the Bisons with lefty Matt Dermody to take his place.

The change with Saltalamacchia comes after the veteran switch-hitter went 1-for-25 with a walk and 16 strikeouts in 10 games.

Saltalamacchia made the team out of spring training after signing a minor-league deal that paid him $1.25 million in the majors.

The Blue Jays claimed Maile off waivers during the first week of the season after the Tampa Bay Rays designated him for assignment.

Considered a strong defender, he was batting .195 in 12 games with the Bisons and has a .214 career average in 57 games.
