The Toronto Blue Jays made a trade Friday, but it wasn’t the deal most fans were hoping for. The Blue Jays sent Deck McGuire to the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations eight days after they designated him for assignment.

Toronto selected McGuire with the 11th overall pick in the 2010 draft, and while he showed promise early in his professional career, he has faltered of late.

After a strong start to the season with double-A New Hampshire, he has a 5.56 ERA in 55 innings spanning 10 starts with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons. That’s nearly a run higher than his career ERA of 4.57 and was enough to cost him his roster spot before reaching the big leagues.

Meanwhile, left-hander Brad Mills cleared waivers and will be assigned to Toronto’s triple-A affiliate.
