The Mexican national baseball team is making plans for World Baseball Classic qualifying season and it appears they’re looking to fill their pitching staff with Toronto Blue Jays.
Jon Morosi of FOX Sports is reporting that Team Mexico hopes to bring Blue Jays hurlers Marco Estrada, Roberto Osuna and Aaron Sanchez aboard for a qualifier in March.
Estrada is coming off a career year where he went 13-8 with a 3.13 ERA in 181 innings that earned him a two-year $26 million contract from the team in November. Osuna, who began his professional career in the Mexican League at the age of 16, excelled as the Blue Jays’ closer in 2015 with Sanchez being deployed as his primary setup man down the stretch. In total, the trio combined for 343 innings of 3.04 ERA ball for the club in 2015 with 21 wins and 20 saves.
Mexico has posted a 6-9 all-time record in three appearances at the World Baseball Classic. The country’s best finish was sixth place at the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2006.
The Blue Jays will need to give their permission for the three pitchers to participate in WBC qualifying; the tournament itself will take place in March of 2017.
