Jose Reyes has a small fracture or crack in one of his ribs, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Friday.
The switch-hitting shortstop underwent an MRI on his ribs to assess the severity of the injury, which caused him to leave Thursday’s game. The Blue Jays are considering placing Reyes on the disabled list, though they won’t make a final decision before reviewing medical information Friday.
“What we do have to be conscious of, too, is you don’t want this thing to turn into a long-term problem,” Gibbons told Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker on Sportsnet 590 The FAN. “If it’s best to nip it in the bud right now, maybe that’s the smart route to take.”
The Blue Jays expect to have a better sense of the injury before Friday’s game.
“It’s a rib problem. It’s just a small, little, tiny crack in the rib, (a) fracture,” Gibbons explained.
In the meantime Ryan Goins and Steve Tolleson will to fill at shortstop for the Blue Jays. Goins, who was recalled to Toronto Thursday, provides impact defence with limited offence while Tolleson has the ability to hit left-handed pitching.
