SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Home plate umpire Dale Scott left Thursday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants in the bottom of the first after apparently getting hit on the hand by a pitch.

Play resumed quickly, with Jim Joyce calling ball and strikes from behind the mound while Mark Ripperger changed into his gear. The bottom of the first featured a two-man umpire crew, with Ron Kulpa on the bases.

The crew went to a three-man rotation for the bottom of the second inning, with Ripperger behind the plate.
