Jacobs, Carruthers & Koe bound for the Brier

Reid Carruthers put a team together late, and his faith and risk was rewarded with a provincial win over Mike McEwen. Carruthers is headed to the Brier in Calgary, making for his fourth appearance in the tournament.

Sochi Olympics gold medallist Brad Jacobs is heading to the Tim Hortons Brier after winning 7-4 over “The Iceman” Al Hackner in the Northern Ontario Travelers men’s championship final Sunday in Kenora, Ont.

The Sault Ste. Marie team of Jacobs, third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden ran the table posting a perfect 8-0 record in the tournament.

Jacobs, the 2013 Brier champ, broke a tie with a deuce in the fifth end and added a steal of one in six to make it 5-2.

Hackner, a two-time world champion from Thunder Bay, picked up a pair of points in seven but Jacobs matched in nine to re-establish the three-point lead.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Brad Gushue has captured his ninth consecutive provincial championship and his 12th in 13 seasons with a 3-0 sweep of the Newfoundland and Labrador Tankard best-of-five series against Gary Wensman in Labrador City, N.L.

Gushue, from St. John’s, defeated Wensman 8-6 Saturday morning in Game 3 to clinch the title and will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Tim Hortons Brier.

P.E.I.

Adam Casey scored the single in the extra end to defeat Jamie Newson 7-6 and capture the P.E.I. Tankard title Tuesday.

The team of Casey, Josh Barry, Anson Carmody and Robbie Doherty are heading to the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary but will first have to play in a relegation round against Yukon and Nova Scotia for the final spot in the 12-team main event.


Nova Scotia

Glen MacLeod dethroned defending champ Jamie Murphy 8-5 Sunday in the Clearwater Men’s Provincial Championship final and will represent Nova Scotia at the Tim Hortons Brier.

MacLeod scored three in the second, two in the fifth and made another trio in seven to slide away.

Murphy scored threes in the fifth and eighth ends en route to a 9-4 win over Chad Stevens in the semifinal Saturday after falling to MacLeod 4-3 in the page 1-vs-2 game. Stevens scored two in the 10th to lift his team to a 5-4 win over Mark Dacey in the 3-vs-4 game and eliminate the 2004 Brier champion.


Ontario

Mark Kean edged John Epping 7-6 with a single in the final frame to win his first career Recharge with Milk Tankard title Sunday in Dorchester, Ont.

The Fenelon Falls-based rink of Kean, Mathew Camm, David Mathers and Scott Howard will represent Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier.

Kean held shot stone in the eighth and angle raised another in with his last rock to count two and retake the lead 6-5. Epping faced three in the ninth and just made it with his final stone to get one and tie it but gave up the hammer coming home.

The Toronto native attempted a triple raise with his last throw but he couldn’t nudge Kean’s shot rock far enough.

Manitoba

Reid Carruthers defeated Mike McEwen 5-3 to win the Safeway Championship Sunday and will represent Manitoba at the Tim Hortons Brier.

McEwen held the hammer in the 10th end but he couldn’t get the freeze with his first skip stone and Carruthers kicked it out to run him out of rocks.

Carruthers, who won the provincial title three times playing front-end on Team Jeff Stoughton, captured his first Manitoba championship as a skip with the all-new rink he formed over the summer featuring third Braeden Moskowy, second Derek Samagalski and lead Colin Hodgson.

Earlier Sunday, McEwen nailed the double takeout in the 10th to run Jeff Stoughton out of rocks in an all-Winnipeg rink semifinal and win 6-4, eliminating the 11-time Manitoba champion.


Saskatchewan

Steve Laycock scored two in the 10th end to lift his team to an 8-7 victory over Jason Jacobson and successfully defend the Sasktel Tankard title Sunday in Melville, Sask.

The team of Laycock, Kirk Muyres, Colton Flasch and Dallan Muyres will return to the Brier representing Saskatchewan.

Team Laycock topped Hartung 7-4 in the page playoff A-vs-B game Saturday night whille Jacobson beat Jeff Hartung 8-3 in eight ends during the semifinal Sunday morning.


Alberta

Calgary’s Kevin Koe defeated Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher 7-4 to claim the Boston Pizza Cup title Sunday in Wainwright, Alta.

Koe will represent Alberta in his hometown Brier event.

Koe captured his fourth career Alberta championship but it’s his first with third Marc Kennedy, second Brent Laing and lead Ben Hebert.

Bottcher did make this amazing shot-of-the-year candidate to lie two and set up a deuce in the sixth end.

B.C.

Jim Cotter’s final shot of the extra end glided to the pin to win 7-6 over Dean Joanisse in the CDI B.C. men’s championship final to retain the championship Sunday in Vernon, B.C.

The Kelowna/Vernon-based rink of Cotter, third Ryan Kuhn, second Tyrel Griffith and lead Rick Sawatsky are now off to the Brier, starting Feb. 28 in Calgary.

It’s the fifth provincial title for Cotter, who was a finalist at the Brier a year ago.

Northwest Territories

Jamie Koe scored a single in the extra end to edge Stephen Moss 5-4 Saturday and win the Northwest Territories men’s championship in Inuvik.

Koe, who posted a perfect 6-0 record at the tournament, will be making his ninth Brier appearance.
