TORONTO (May 8, 2014) Damien Cox, one of Canada’s top sports journalists, will be bringing his spin full-time to Sportsnet, starting next month. The award-winning journalist will serve sports fans at the highest level in his new role as a lead insider for NHL coverage and a regular contributor across all platforms including Sportsnet, sportsnet.ca, Sportsnet magazine , Sportsnet 590 The FAN and Sportsnet 960 The FAN.

Cox will continue in his analyst role for Sportsnet’s CHL coverage including Friday Night Hockey and the Memorial Cup, and for Sportsnet’s tennis coverage. He will also be responsible for the Sportsnet Top Prospects List, which will track the top stars in the CHL and elsewhere, serving as a definitive list of the future stars of the NHL. In addition, Cox will make regular appearances on Connected, as well as on Sportsnet 590 The FAN.

“Damien has been covering the NHL for 25 years and is one of Canada’s most versatile sports media personalities. His tremendous hockey and sports knowledge, combined with his unique ability to both break and tell stories, is a huge asset to sports fans and to Sportsnet,” said Scott Moore, President, Sportsnet & NHL Properties, Rogers. “We’re thrilled he’s joining our team as one of our lead NHL insiders and we’re looking forward to leveraging his knowledge and expertise across all sports to deliver premium content and news coverage for Canadians across all of our platforms.”

A recipient of a National Newspaper Award for sports writing in 1998, Cox started his career with the Toronto Star in 1985, working as a news reporter, sports reporter, and most recently, sports columnist. He served as co-host of Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown on Sportsnet 590 The FAN from 2001 to 2004. In 2011, Cox joined Sportsnet as analyst for Sportsnet’s NHL, CHL and tennis coverage, and also resumed his co-host role with Prime Time Sports. With nearly 30 years of experience, he’s covered 23 Stanley Cup Finals, 20 NHL All-Star Games, 24 NHL Entry Drafts, four Olympic Winter Games, 10 Wimbledon tournaments and countless other marquee sporting events. Cox has also served as an insider, panelist and contributor to a variety of North American publications and broadcast programs.

“Ever since I joined Sportsnet in 2011, I knew I was going to be part of something quite special,” said Cox. “There was a solid vision in place, and now with the 12-year NHL deal starting in July, we can really start to see that dream becoming a reality. I’ve been fortunate to have worked for 29 years at Canada’s largest and best newspaper. And, given the wonderful opportunities that lay ahead, combined with the talented people I will be working with every day, I couldn’t have written the next chapter of my career in a better way than to take my association with Sportsnet to the next level.”
