The 101st Grey Cup saw the Saskatchewan Roughriders rout the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 45-23 at Mosaic Stadium. The CFL title game had to compete with a marquee NFL game and the American Music Awards, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell by reading the multitude of Grey Cup-related tweets throughout the night.
Tom Hanks and Martin Short arrived ahead of kickoff and were apparently in Regina to cheer on the visiting Tiger-Cats.
The proceedings would eventually get underway as Saskatchewan natives, The Sheepdogs, performed a couple of their hits songs for their home province.
The Riders raced out to an early lead and were in the ascendance as the interval approached. Inevitably, the attention shifted towards the halftime show. To say the reviews of Hedley’s performance were ‘mixed’ might be an understatement.
Cheerleaders were dancing in parkas, fire was being shot into the sky and snowmobiles flew through the air.
Despite a second-half rally by the Tiger-Cats, the Riders would extend their lead and won the 101st Grey Cup in front of their own fans.
