MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. — Former NFL star Irving Fryar and his mother have been ordered to pay $615,600 in restitution to five lending institutions that were cheated in a mortgage scam.

Fryar and his mother, Allene McGhee, were convicted in August of applying for multiple mortgage loans in quick succession while using the same property as collateral. Fryar was sentenced in October to five years in prison while his mother got three years of probation.

The restitution order was handed up Monday by a New Jersey judge. The pair will be allowed to make monthly payments.

The 53-year-old Fryar was a star at New Jersey’s Rancocas Valley High School before making his name as a wide receiver at the University of Nebraska and as an NFL player for the New England Patriots, the Miami Dolphins, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins.
