New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated on Wednesday, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.

ESPN obtained a copy of Pierre-Paul’s medical chart, which Schefter posted on his Twitter account.

Pierre-Paul, 26, injured his hand in a fireworks accident on the weekend of July 4 in Florida. He is expected to play this season.

The Giants had no knowledge of the amputation until Schefter’s report, according to multiple reports. Team officials reportedly flew down to Florida to check out his status, but were unable to meet with him at the hospital and returned back to New York.

Many on social media were up in arms after Schefter tweeted out the medical report:

The Giants placed their franchise tag on the veteran defensive lineman in March, but Pierre-Paul has yet to sign the franchise tender that would pay him $14.813 million next season.

The two-time Pro Bowler has recorded 286 tackles, 42 sacks and eight forced fumbles over five NFL season.
