Winnipeg Jets fans angry over new obstructed view

Mark Spector and Gene Principe discuss how the Winnipeg Jets have done a rebuild the right way, and why they could be Canada's best hope at bringing back the Stanley Cup.

Just last spring, Winnipeg’s MTS Centre was being lauded as one of the best rinks to take in an NHL game.

Now, nearly 200 Jets fans have been robbed of a clear view of the entire ice.

True North added 278 premium loge seats to the arena over the summer, but the new seating has obstructed the sight lines of almost 200 ticket-buyers.

The issue was brought to light Tuesday night during the club’s preseason home opener.

“We all just got shocked on Tuesday,” Jesse Nicholls, a longtime season ticket-holder, told the Winnipeg Sun, which put out a call for photos of the obstructed views. “As much as I like beer and hot dogs, I’m there to watch the Jets. Which is pretty much impossible.”

True North spokesman Scott Brown responded in an email to the newspaper.

“We are currently reviewing the specific locations and are working on a plan to address the concerns,” Brown wrote. “We will work collaboratively with each of the customers that have been impacted to determine a solution.”

The Jets told Nicholls they just discovered the problem Tuesday, Nicholls relayed to the Sun.

“It’s safe to assume they saw those seats and knew it was going to be a problem before Tuesday. It’s their building,” Nicholls said. “Instead they stayed silent and let everybody be shocked.

“I get it, it’s a business…. But why would you screw over your loyal customers – and right after they signed new contracts?”

According to multiple reports from fans, True North did not warn them that the new loge seating would hinder their view in advance.
