Alex Ovechkin stars in Russian charity basketball game

Alex Ovechkin hammers a goal by Matt Murray to open the scoring in Game 5.

Most hockey players hit the golf course during the off-season. Alex Ovechkin, however, went straight to the basketball court.

Less than a month after being eliminated in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and about a week after claiming bronze at the World Championship, the Washington Capitals’ captain took part in a charity basketball game in Russia to help raise funds for children with cerebral palsy.

And he was actually pretty good. Check out some of his highlights, which include a few steals, some nice passes and of course plenty of shots. (You wouldn’t expect anything else from the NHL’s goal-scoring leader, would you?)

Of course, it’s not a mystery where his basketball skills come from — his mother is a former Olympian in the sport.

In the end, Ovechkin helped his team to an all-for-fun victory over former NBAer Andrei Kirilenko’s squad, with a final score of 76-71.
