MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens may have found themselves a goalie.

For a second game in a row, the acrobatic Scrivens allowed only one goal as Montreal downed the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Sven Andrighetto’s shootout tally on Sunday afternoon.

Scrivens had done the same in a 5-1 win Saturday afternoon over the Edmonton Oilers to give Montreal a sweep of their two games on Super Bowl weekend and their first consecutive victories since Nov. 25 and 27.

“It’s nice to get two wins,” said Scrivens. “Having a bit of ownership of it makes it a little sweeter but the big thing was we got four points this weekend.

“We needed it. Now we have to focus on the next one.”

The Canadiens acquired the 29-year-old Scrivens from Edmonton on Dec. 28 for forward Zack Kassian to provide depth in goal with Carey Price out since late November with a lower body injury. He has mostly backed up rookie Mike Condon, but likely earned more starts after a pair of impressive outings.

“It’s definitely something we needed to get our confidence going,” captain Max Pacioretty said of Scrivens’ performance. “Sometimes we just felt deflated when we were playing well and we gave up a huge opportunity, but he jump-started the weekend with a couple of big saves early in the Edmonton game and we rallied around that.”

Scrivens struggled as Edmonton’s starter last season and was in the American Hockey League when he was traded to Montreal. He has an unusual style – scrambling in his crease but somehow making saves – that Pacioretty called “athletic” and compared it to Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings.

“ ‘Athletic’ is not always a compliment,” Scrivens said with a laugh. “You try to stay in control as long as you can and try to push that panic button farther down the line, but sometimes you have to press it.”

For a second game in a row, he was tested early as Carolina (24-21-9) had a handful of glittering early chances but managed only Jeff Skinner‘s goal on a tip of a Jordan Staal shot at 2:27.

Pacioretty tied it 8:11 into the second with his 20th of the season on a wrist shot past a screened Cam Ward for Montreal (26-24-4).

“We had a lot of good looks,” said Hurricanes captain Eric Staal, who has only two assists in his last 10 games. “Right now they’re not falling, especially for me.

“I’m trying to scrape up some confidence. I’m going to need one to go in off my behind or something and then go from there.”

Scrivens stopped all five Carolina shooters, including Eric Staal on the final attempt, to secure the win.

It was a game of milestones as Andrei Markov and Eric Staal each played their 900th game and Montreal centre Torrey Mitchell played his 500th. Staal, 31, has amassed 772 points while 37-year-old Markov, who missed large swaths of three seasons with knee injuries, has 518.

“I’ve been fortunate to play in this league as long as I have,” said Staal. “I hope there’s many more down the road.

“I’m still a young guy. I can play this game for a while yet.”

The Hurricanes outshot Montreal 34-31 in regulation time and 35-34 overall.

It is the 25th year the Canadiens have played back-to-back afternoon games at home during Super Bowl weekend. They are 27-18-5 in those games.

The Canadiens end a four-game homestand Tuesday night against Tampa Bay, while the Hurricanes are off until Friday at home against Pittsburgh.
