Bruins’ David Backes undergoes elbow procedure

David Backes made an immediate impact with the Bruins, scoring twice in the second period to tie things up against the Blue Jackets in their season opener.

Boston Bruins forward David Backes has undergone an elbow procedure, the team announced Wednesday.

General Manager Don Sweeney said the minor surgery was performed on Monday, but did not give a timeline for the winger’s return.

Backes, who signed with Boston as a free agent this off-season, has registered two goals and two assists in five games with the Bruins so far this season.

Along with the update on Backes, the Bruins also announced Wednesday that they have recalled forward Austin Czarnik ahead of their game against the New York Rangers.

Czarnik made his NHL debut earlier this season and has skated in two games with the Bruins, recording two penalty minutes. He has one goal and two assists in two games with the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence so far this year.

The Bruins are also dealing with injuries in net, with starter Tuukka Rask still listed as day-to-day. Rask won’t be ready for Wednesday’s game, but could suit up Saturday versus the Detroit Red Wings.

Rookie netminder Zane McIntyre will get the start Wednesday.
