Flames’ Smid leaves game after hit by Despres

Calgary’s Ladislav Smid would leave the game after taking this it to the head from Pittsburgh’s Simon Despres.

Calgary Flames defenceman Ladislav Smid was forced to leave Friday’s game after being on the receiving end of a hard hit from Simon Despres of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Late in the second period, Depres landed the hit in the Penguins’ zone as Smid went to play the puck. The Flames announced Smid would not return to the game with what they’re calling an “upper-body injury.”

Depres was not penalized on the play.
