Canucks’ Erik Gudbranson out indefinitely, requires wrist surgery

Nick Kypreos, Kelly Hrudey and Elliotte Friedman run through the biggest stories in hockey, touching on the latest injury updates, Price’s bounce back and the latest rumours about Maple Leafs James van Riemsdyk.

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Erik Gudbranson will undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his wrist and there’s no timetable for a return.

A projected timeline on Gudbranson’s full recovery will be provided following the surgery, the team announced Sunday.

“Erik suffered ligament damage to his wrist this season that has affected his wrist function,” general manager Jim Benning said in a release. “Continued treatment and rehabilitation have not improved his condition and Erik and our Canucks medical team believe that surgery offers the best long-term outcome and are confident in a full recovery.”

The 24-year-old, who was acquired from the Florida Panthers in the off-season, has been one of the most reliable blue-liners for the Canucks this season, averaging over 20 minutes of ice-time with six points (one goal, five assists) in 30 games.

“Erik’s leadership qualities and strong physical presence will be missed,” said Benning. “But this is a decision that best supports a long, productive and healthy career.”
