Canucks ink free agent defenceman Troy Stecher

Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning talks about meeting with Thatcher Demko and Brock Boeser.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed free agent defenceman Troy Stecher to a contract.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Richmond, B.C. native just finished his junior season at the University of North Dakota where he led the Fighting Hawks to their eighth national championship.

Stecher led all UND defencemen in goals (8) and assists (21). He finished sixth among NCAA defencemen with 29 points this season.

The 22-year-old said earlier this month that he “dreamed” of playing for the Canucks when he was younger.

He was a teammate of Canucks prospect Brock Boeser, who recently decided to return to UND for another season.
