The Carolina Hurricanes announced Sunday that the team has recalled goaltender Scott Darling from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).

With goaltender Curtis McElhinney nursing a lower-body injury, Darling may get a chance to regain the Hurricanes’ net after he struggled earlier this season, posting a 2-4-1 record with a 3.14 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage in seven games with the Hurricanes.

In the second of his four-year, $16.6 million contract, Darling was placed on waivers by Carolina Nov. 29 and successfully cleared the next day — meaning no other team in the league wanted to take on the 29-year-old’s contract.

The Newport News, Va., native appeared in five AHL games with the Checkers this season, posting a 3-1-0 record with a 2.35 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage, playing much better of late.

The Hurricanes’ current No. 1 Petr Mrazek played well in Friday’s 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks, so expect Darling to backup the 26-year-old when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
