The day the New York Islanders’ four Stanley Cup banners and retired heroes’ numbers were pulley’d down from the Nassau Coliseum rafters, majority owner Charles Wang bought space in Newsday and penned a letter to the club’s fans.
In Friday’s edition of the newspaper, Wang expressed his gratitude to “the best fans in hockey” and vowed more success in Brooklyn, where the Islanders will call the Barclays Center home starting in 2015-16.
“This franchise is not satisfied with only qualifying for the playoffs because Islanders fans deserve a Stanley Cup,” the owner wrote. “We will not stop until this happens and Lord Stanley returns.”
Wang also dropped a pretty sweet reference to this Shawn Bates penalty-shot goal versus the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Curtis Joseph in the 2002 playoffs.
