Cherry: Kadri must have good year or he’s toast

Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock has high expectations for Nazem Kadri, who has this next year to prove he’s an elite player before he gets paid like one.

Nazem Kadri signed a one-year “show me” extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday.

The deal is worth $4.1 million and gives Kadri a golden opportunity to prove his worth as an elite centre — and a chance to cash in once the year’s up.

Don Cherry took to Twitter Monday to voice his opinion on the polarizing player and his signing in a series of 14 tweets.

The overall sentiment?

“Now he (has) a new beginning and a new coach that won’t put up with any BS,” tweeted Cherry. “Nazem must have a good year or he is toast.”

This isn’t the first time Cherry has commented on Kadri’s time with the Leafs.

In March, Cherry came to the defence of the 24-year-old forward after a three-game suspension, saying, “The kid is not going to be here in two years.”
