MacKinnon avoids discipline after hit on Schenn

Avalanche coach Patrick Roy had a conniption on the bench after the refs ejected Nathan MacKinnon for an illegal hit on the Flyers' Luke Schenn.

Nathan MacKinnon has avoided punishment for his dangerous hit on Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Luke Schenn, Sportsnet’s Damien Cox reports.

Damien Cox on Twitter: “Can confirm no supplementary disciple from @NHLPlayerSafety for Colorado forward Nathan MacKinnon after his hit on Philly’s Luke Schenn.”

MacKinnon, the Colorado Avalanche sophomore, was chasing a dump in during the final minute of the first period of the Flyers’ 4-3 win on Saturday when he pushed Schenn from behind, causing the defenceman to go crashing into the end boards. MacKinnon received a five-minute boarding major for hit. Schenn left the game and did not return. The Flyers tweeted Sunday that he will be out approximately two weeks with an upper-body injury.

MacKinnon told the Denver Post’s Adrian Dater that he took full responsibility for the hit, which he called a “dumb play.”

“Obviously it sucks, but like I said, I didn’t mean to hurt him,” MacKinnon said in a post-game interview. “I feel really bad about it. I think he was turning or trying to get position on me and I pushed him at a bad time. Definitely a scary play.”
