Some tidbits of news regarding Jim Benning’s plans for the Canucks’ contract-year forwards surfaced this week, as the general manager faces his first NHL trade deadline at the helm in Vancouver.
The playoff-hunting Canucks have reportedly commenced contract negotiations with Derek Dorsett, according to News 1130 Sports in Vancouver, which tweeted a series of contract-talk updates Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Dorsett, skating under a modest $1.633 cap hit, has five goals and 12 assists for the team through 57 games — a marked improvement from his production last season as a New York Ranger. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
The station also spoke with Brad Richardson’s agent, Mark Guy, who said that his client’s ankle injury is improving but there is still no timeline for his return.
“We have not begun any formal contract discussions at this time,” Guy said, regarding Richardson’s expiring contract.
The 30-year-old wing was on pace for a career season, having scored eight goals and 11 assists in 43 games before going on injured reserve.
Like Dorsett, Richardson ($1.15 cap hit) will also be a UFA this summer.
Shawn Mathias, the remaining Canucks forward who could walk this summer, carries a cap hit of $1.75 million and should expect a raise.
Acquired from Florida as part of last season’s Roberto Luongo trade, Matthias, 27, is on pace to set career highs in goals and points.
“It’s premature to discuss Shawn’s contract situation,” agent Rich Evans told News 1130.
