The Arizona Coyotes continued their active 2016 NHL Draft, acquiring defenceman Anthony DeAngelo from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the No. 37 overall pick, which the club used to select defenceman Libor Hajek.
DeAngelo, 20, was the Lightning’s first-round pick (No. 20 overall) two years ago in the 2014 NHL Draft. The American defenceman spent this past season with the Syracuse Crunch, Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate, where he scored six goals and 37 assists with 84 penalty minutes in 69 games.
He was named the CHL defenceman of the year while playing for the Sarnia Sting and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds during the 2014-15 season.
Hajek is a 6-foot-1 defenceman with a left-handed shot that spent last season with the Saskatoon Blades.
The Coyotes had a busy opening night of the draft, selecting forward Clayton Keller with the No. 7 overall pick before trading up in the first round with the Detroit Red Wings (see above) in order to select defenceman Jakob Chychrun at No. 16 overall.
