Cherry: Oilers need to make big trade now

Donald S. Cherry joined Prime Time Sports to share his take on what all the Canadian teams should do to improve this season.

Hockey Night in Canada’s Don Cherry addressed some hot-button topics when he called in to Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Monday: Swedish superstars, U.S. college hockey versus the CHL, and that “No free agent that’s any good is ever going to come to Canada.”

But perhaps the biggest talking point was his opinion on the Edmonton Oilers — in particular, his belief that the club needs to trade one of its top young stars.

“You can’t trade (Nail) Yakupov, because nobody’s going to take him,” Cherry said. “(Jordan) Eberle or one of those guys have got to go.”

Cherry went on to say that the team simply cannot continue the way that they are now, and that a trade should be in the team’s very near future.

“It’s a tough deal giving one of (the young players) away, but something’s gotta go,” he said.

Cherry also touched on the team’s dismal situation in net: “(If) you don’t have a goalie, you don’t have a chance,” he said.

What about veteran goaltender and free agent Martin Brodeur?

“You might call him,” Cherry said, “But you’ll never get him. He’ll never go there.”
