Flames recall Ryan Lomberg, assign Valiev and Peluso to AHL

Doug MacLean talks about the one-game suspension to Ryan Lomberg, who made a line change specifically to instigate a fight as his Flames took on the Wild, saying it is worth it to stick up for his teammate.

The Calgary Flames made some moves on Monday, one day after suffering a 1-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

The team announced that they have recalled forward Ryan Lomberg from the Stockton Heat, their American Hockey League affiliate, and have assigned defenceman Rinat Valiev and forward Anthony Peluso to the AHL.

Lomberg was suspended two games for instigating a fight with less than five minutes left in regulation Thursday against Minnesota. The 24-year-old has played in just three games with the Flames this season, posting no points and 17 penalty minutes.

Lomberg, a Richmond Hill, Ont. native, still has one game left to serve on his suspension. He served the first game Saturday when the Flames played the Nashville Predators, but was sent down before Sunday’s game against the Oilers, so that game won’t count towards his suspension. Lomberg will sit out Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Peluso, 29, played just 2:28 for the Flames against, accumulating seven penalty minutes — including a fight with Oilers’ heavyweight Milan Lucic.

Valiev, 23, has not appeared in a game for the Flames since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 1.
