In a somewhat surprising move, the Florida Panthers placed veteran forward Brad Boyes on unconditional waivers Tuesday with the intention of buying out the remainder of his contract.
The 33-year-old had one year remaining on his deal that came with a cap hit of $2.625 million — $2.5 million in actual salary.
Boyes had been one of the Panthers’ more productive players over the last two seasons, putting up 35 goals and 74 points in 154 games.
In 762 career regular season games, Boyes has 203 goals, 278 assists and is tied for second all-time in career shootout goals with 39 (just one behind Jonathan Toews’ 40).
