Not so fast. Donald Brashear’s professional hockey career is not over.
The 42-year-old enforcer has signed a deal with Modo of the Swedish Hockey League for the remainder of the 2014-15 season, the team announced Tuesday.
Peter Forsberg, an assistant general manager with the club, called on his former Philadelphia Flyers teammate to provide the SEL club with some toughness.
The 6-foot-3, 237-pound winger was last seen in the NHL playing for the 2009-10 New York Rangers. After that, he spent three seasons with Rivere-du-Loop of LNAH, a minor professional league based in Quebec.
In 1,025 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks (where he was teammates with Swedish icons Markus Naslund and the Sedin brothers), Washington Capitals, Flyers and Rangers, Brashear amassed 85 goals, 120 assists and a whopping 2,634 penalty minutes.
“It will be interesting to see how Donald can help Modo and these guys,” general manager Per Svartvadet said via release (translated).
Modo (7-1-2-13) is struggling this season, sitting one point from the basement of the 12-team league.
