Game 7 extravaganza: Oilers-Ducks, Penguins-Capitals by the numbers

NHL insider Glenn Healy discusses the Oilers statement win in Game 6, specifically about Leon Draisaitl, who looks like a perennial playoff performer, but is still just a kid.

Double Game 7 night? Yes please.

Fans of the Capitals, Penguins, Oilers and Ducks may be nervously biting their nails, but the rest of us are kicking back and looking forward to a couple big games.

[gamecard id=1878759 league=nhl date=2017-05-10]The Caps can overcome their demons with a big win over the Pens, while a Pittsburgh win would push the defending champs through and leave the Presidents’ Trophy winners wondering how to proceed after another disappointing loss. The Oilers would continue a remarkable turnaround with a Game 7 win of their own on Wednesday, while a Ducks win would push Anaheim to its second conference final in three years.

[gamecard id=1878773 league=nhl date=2017-05-10]If you’re hoping for overtime, consider that 40 of 166 Game 7s have gone into extra time (24.1 per cent). The home teams Wednesday night are Washington and Anaheim, which gives them an historical advantage as the hosts have won 97 of those 166 Game 7s, but it’s even more important to get the game’s first goal. Teams that got on the board first are 124-42 all-time in Game 7s, including a perfect 5-0 record in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As we buckle up for a big night, here are some interesting Game 7-related numbers for both series:

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS at WASHINGTON CAPITALS
• The Penguins have won each of their previous Game 7s against the Capitals in 1992, 1995 and 2009. Two of those three victories came on the road in Washington, where Wednesday’s Game 7 will be held.

• Pittsburgh has a perfect 5-0 record on the road all-time in Game 7s, which is the best among all major sports franchises.

• This is the fourth time Washington has rallied back to force a Game 7 after trailing a series 3-1. The Caps won two of those three Game 7s, both of which came at home: in 1988 against the Flyers, and 2009 against the Rangers.

• The last Penguins-Capitals Game 7, in 2009, ended in a decisive 6-2 Penguins win, with Sidney Crosby scoring two goals and adding an assist. Bill Guerin scored the game-winner, while Alex Ovechkin scored once on three shots.

• There are eight players expected to play Wednesday’s Game 7 who also played the last time these two teams played a seventh game in the playoffs: Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Chris Kunitz and Evgeni Malkin from Pittsburgh; Nicklas Backstrom, Jay Beagle, Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Orpik for Washington. Orpik, however, was a member of the Penguins in the previous Game 7.

• Justin Williams, aka Mr. Game 7, will look to add to his legacy Wednesday night. Williams is a perfect 7-0 all-time in Game 7s, scoring seven goals, seven assists and 14 points in those games. The last Game 7 he participated in Williams scored a goal and added an assist as the Kings beat the Blackhawks 5-4.

• Williams already holds the record for most points scored in Game 7s with 14, but he’s currently tied for the all-time record in Game 7 goals with Hall of Famer Glenn Anderson.

• The Penguins have some individual Game 7 luck on their side as well. Carl Hagelin has won seven of eight Game 7s he’s been involved in, while 40-year-old Matt Cullen is 5-0. Neither player has been as productive in these decisive games as Williams, though, with the two players combining for zero goals and five points in Game 7s.

• Braden Holtby vs. Marc-Andre Fleury: The Caps goalie is 2-3 all-time in Game 7s with a .921 save percentage and 2.11 GAA. Fleury is also 2-3, but has a .901 save percentage and 2.29 GAA.

EDMONTON OILERS at ANAHEIM DUCKS
• While the home teams historically have a Game 7 advantage, that certainly hasn’t been true for the Ducks in recent years. On Wednesday, Anaheim will host a Game 7 for the fifth straight season and didn’t win any of the previous four. In fact, the Ducks have not won a Game 7 since 2006, a year in which they went to the conference final. When Anaheim won the Stanley Cup in 2007, they didn’t face a Game 7.

• The good news for Anaheim? Current coach Randy Carlyle was also behind the bench for their last Game 7 win in 2006 during his first term with the team.

• If experience is a factor, the Oilers’ Milan Lucic will play an important role. Lucic will play in his 11th Game 7 Wednesday night, the most of any player in this game. In the 10 he’s played already, Lucic has four goals and six points.

• However, if experience is actually a factor, the Oilers as a team are at a disadvantage. Lucic is the only Oiler with more than one point scored in Game 7s, while David Desharnais, Matt Hendricks, Pat Maroon, and Benoit Pouliot are the only others who have hit the score sheet.

• Anaheim’s Patrick Eaves has played the most Game 7s for the Ducks with seven. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry are next most experienced Ducks in Game 7 having played in six of them — however, they’ve only won one of those.

• The Oilers franchise will play its first Game 7 since the 2006 Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes, which they lost 3-1.

• Anaheim has played eight Game 7s in franchise history, posting a 2-6 record, while the Oilers have a 6-3 record in nine Game 7s all-time. All of Anaheim’s have been played since 1997, while the Oilers have played just two Game 7s in that time, winning one of them.

• Oilers goalie Cam Talbot has never played in a Game 7, but 23-year-old John Gibson has played one for Anaheim, although he’d probably rather forget it. Gibson allowed four goals on 18 shots against the Los Angeles Kings and was pulled after 22:02. The disaster left Gibson with a .778 save percentage and 10.89 GAA in Game 7.
