Marc-Andre Fleury generated interest from several teams at the NHL Trade Deadline, but the Pittsburgh Penguins held onto the veteran netminder.
The chances the 2003 first-overall pick remains a member of the Penguins beyond this season, however, are slim with the Penguins expected to protect Matt Murray prior to the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft.
This means Fleury will in all probability either be dealt or end up in Las Vegas – or both.
“A lot of people believe George McPhee is targeting Marc-Andre Fleury,” Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos said Saturday on the Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “Let’s face it, he’s the best goalie in the world that’s available. He can be a franchise type of player and certainly might be the guy that ends up being the face of that franchise in the very near future.
Fleury has two years remaining on his contract at a $5.75-million cap hit and has a no-movement clause. The 32-year-old is 15-8-5 with a .905 save percentage and 3.15 goals-against average in 28 starts this season. In comparison, Murray, 22, is 24-8-3 with a .926 save percentage and 2.28 GAA.
