“Life is all about making the right decisions.”
That is the lesson Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban tries to share with young people whenever he can.
When a group of Toronto students living in the Jane and Finch area won an international trivia event, Subban took the opportunity to reward them for their accomplishments. The students, attending a summer camp at York University, were gathered in an auditorium where Subban surprised them with prizes and plenty of words of encouragement.
“We’re trying to give these kids the opportunity to make the right decisions in life,” Subban told NHL.com. “It is a sensitive age once they reach high school. They are going from being kids into being young adults, and around that time is when you are held responsible for your actions. It can hit you in the face pretty hard.”
This isn’t the first time Subban has extended a helping hand. The 26-year-old — who has been known to surprise kids with an impromptu road hockey game every once in a while — has made it his mission to help those in need through his charity, the P.K. Subban Foundation, with help from his family.
“I’m from Toronto, so whenever I can give back to communities here, I do,” Subban said. “I know I play in Montreal and obviously I give back to Quebec and the city of Montreal a lot, but every now and then you have to remember this is my hometown. Even though I didn’t grow up in Jane and Finch, I had a lot of friends and family members who lived in this area.”
