Locked in a 2-2 tie thanks to two late Toronto goals, the Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres took part in an epic 15-round shootout Saturday night – tying the record for longest in NHL history.
The shootout featured 29 shooters who didn’t score until Jay McClement ended it with a wrist shot through Jhonas Enroth’s legs.
But McClement’s goal wasn’t the highlight of the marathon shootout, Far from it.
In the tenth round defenceman Paul Ranger decided to take a page out of Marek Malik’s playbook. With a grin on his face as he approached the puck, Ranger took an unorthodox crack at the goal, kicking his stick and flicking the puck toward Enroff in the Sabres’ net.
Ranger couldn’t convert on his “kick shot,” but succeeded in getting a laugh out of coach Randy Carlyle and inciting an explosive response from the Twitterverse.
