Jason Spezza will play one more hockey game in Ontario before he flies south to Dallas.
The former Ottawa Senators captain is set to headline the NHL contingent of the Sportsnet Ball Hockey Challenge, a free, fan-friendly event set to take place at this weekend’s Rogers Cup tennis tournament.
“I’m a big tennis fan. That’s why I’m happy to get on board and help with the Rogers Cup. I’m down there every year,” Spezza told Sportsnet 590 The Fan Monday. “It’s a great sport to watch live, and it’s always great to meet some of the guys.”
Spezza will be joined by fellow NHLers such as Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele and Ottawa’s Mike Hoffman at Rexall Centre Court at 12:30 p.m. to face-off against yet-to-be-named ATP World Tour tennis stars.
The game will feature two 20-minute periods as well as a skills competition.
“I’m sure they’ll run circles around us,” Spezza said of the tennis pros. “I’m not too sure about their puck skills, but they’re in good shape.”
