The Winnipeg Jets signed free agent college forward Brandon Tanev to a one-year contract on Wednesday.
The two-way deal is for the remainder of the season and carries a pro-rated average annual value of $925,000.
“We are very excited that Brandon has chosen to sign with the Jets,” said Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff. “Brandon enjoyed a tremendously successful collegiate career at Providence and will bring a combination of high-end speed, energy, and physicality that complements the identity of the Winnipeg Jets.”
The 24-year-old Tanev had 15 goals and 13 assists in 38 games for the Providence College Friars this season. The Friars’ season finished on Friday with a loss to Minnesota-Duluth.
Tanev scored the winning goal that helped Providence College win last year’s NCAA men’s hockey championship over Boston University.
In 149 games over four seasons, the Toronto native had 35 goals and 42 assists.
Tanev is the younger brother of Vancouver Canucks defenceman Chris Tanev.
