John Tavares helped off ice with apparent leg injury

Watch as New York Islanders captain John Taveres is helped off the ice after suffering an injury against the New Jersey Devils.

The New York Islanders will be hoping the news is good for John Tavares.

In the final couple of minutes in Friday’s Devils-Islanders game, Tavares fell awkwardly and needed to be helped off the ice. He wasn’t hit or poked with a stick, but appeared to tweak something as he skated behind the net. Tavares fell to the ice clutching the back of his leg.

He left the game and did not return.

Since there was just 3:14 left in regulation, it’s hard to know yet how serious the injury is, but it comes at a bad time for the Islanders.

With just five games left in the regular season, the Islanders sit four points behind Boston for the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Tavares, who scored the Game 6 OT winner against Florida last season to lift the Islanders to their first series win since 1993, leads the team again this season with 66 points in 77 games.
