Tootoo fined maximum for dangerous trip of Seth Jones

Pekka Rinne made 22 saves and the Nashville Predators ran their season-opening winning streak to three with a 3-1 victory over the struggling New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

The NHL’s player safety department has issued its first fine of the season.

New Jersey Devils forward Jordin Tootoo was fined $2,217.74 Thursday for the dangerous trip he laid on Nashville Predators defenceman Seth Jones during Tuesday’s 3-1 Predators victory.

The incident occurred at 7:55 of the third period, and Tootoo was dealt a minor penalty for tripping on the play. Jones crashed hard into the boards but got up immediately.

Tootoo’s salary-based fine is the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
