The Los Angeles Kings signed free agent defenceman Tom Gilbert to a one-year contract Friday.

The Kings were light on salary cap space heading into free agency and GM Dean Lombardi managed to bolster his blue line at discount, inking Gilbert to a very reasonable $1.4-million deal.

Gilbert totalled one goal and one assist in 45 games with the Montreal Canadiens in 2015-16. The 33-year-old underwent season-ending knee surgery in February.

Gilbert has registered 44 goals and 218 points in 637 career games with the Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, and Canadiens.
