Maple Leafs sign veteran defenceman Ron Hainsey to two-year deal

David Amber, John Shannon and Chris Johnston discuss the Toronto Maple Leafs taking a dip into NHL free agency.

The Toronto Maple Leafs added some defensive depth as free agency open Saturday, signing Ron Hainsey to a two-year deal.

The contract is worth a total of $6 million, which means a cap hit $3 million.

Hainsey played a valuable support role for the Pittsburgh Penguins en route to hoisting the Stanley Cup in the first playoff appearance of his 15-year NHL career. He was acquired by the Pens from the Hurricanes prior to the trade deadline.

At 36 years old, Hainsey becomes the oldest member of a youthful Maple Leafs squad.

Earlier in the day the team re-signed goalies Curtis McElhinney and Garret Sparks to two-year contracts.
