NHL looking into alternatives for offside review

Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman take a look at all the top news from another busy Saturday in the NHL.

At the end of the Jets-Capitals game Saturday, Washington head coach Barry Trotz challenged the winning goal on the basis that the play was offside.

The ensuing review took nine minutes to come to a conclusion.

On Hockey Night in Canada’s Headlines segment, Damien Cox noted that the only looks the linesmen and referees get on the ice is the television feed.

Cox mentioned that the NHL would like to try adding two television cameras to the broadcast for linesmen to use in reviews. One overhead view and one along the blue line. Those two camera angles will be tested in a couple of New York-area arenas, Cox said.

Another change the league may consider the notion of offside itself. Perhaps instead of needing to keep at least one foot onside as the puck crosses the blue line, players will have to wait to enter the zone entirely until the puck enters first.
