NHL looking into hiring female officials

Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman take a look at all the top headlines from around the NHL including injuries and the Anaheim Ducks ugly start to the season.

The NHL is looking into hiring female officials, according to Damien Cox of Sportsnet, following the lead of the NFL and NBA.

Cox noted that the league invited a female referee to their summer combine, a first, and that the vice president and director of officiating, Stephen Walkom, welcomes male and female applicants.

Elliotte Friedman, in his most recent edition of 30 Thoughts, wrote about some of the recent developments for women in male-only sports such as the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs hiring assistant coach Becky Hammon and the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals hiring Jen Welter to work with linebackers.
