Goaltender Matt Murray will miss the next three-to-six weeks with a broken hand suffered at the World Cup of Hockey.
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced the injury in a press release on Saturday morning.
Murray, 22, was hurt in Team North America’s round-robin game against Russia on Monday night — jamming his hand in the second period.
Russia scored four goals on seven shots in the second against Murray, who was subsequently pulled in the 4-3 loss.
Team North America head coach Todd Todd McLellan started Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson in the team’s final preliminary round game against Sweden on Wednesday while Murray was a scratch. Despite beating the Swedes, the North Americans were ousted from the tournament by finishing third in Group B.
Murray told reporters at practise on Tuesday that there was nothing to worry about with his hand and that it was nothing major despite soreness.
The injury comes after a remarkable playoff run last season for the Thunder Bay, Ont., native. He started 21 games for the Penguins and went 15-6-2 with a 2.08 goals-against average and .923 save percentage to lead Pittsburgh to a Stanley Cup title.
