Rogers Sportsnet has added one of the NHL’s greatest defencemen to its broadcast booth as Hall of Famer Denis Potvin takes the new analyst position for Scotiabank Senators Hockey.
"I am just thrilled to be back in the city of Ottawa and thankful for Sportsnet offering the opportunity," said Potvin. "I’m really looking forward to working with Dean Brown, the Ottawa Senators and the Sportsnet family."
“Denis Potvin is an experienced, entertaining analyst," said Rob Corte, Executive Producer, Live Events, Rogers Sportsnet. "We are very excited to add an NHL Hall of Famer to our Senators’ broadcast team.”
Potvin will bring his extensive experience in the game after playing in the NHL for 15 years and winning four Stanley Cups as captain of the New York Islanders from 1980-1983. The Hull, Quebec native began his career starring for the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s from 1968-1973. He was drafted first-overall in the 1973 NHL Entry Draft and went on to capture the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 1974. Potvin is a three-time Norris Trophy winner and was a key member of the winning Canadian team at the 1976 Canada Cup. Potvin retired from the NHL in 1988 and was inducted in both the Hockey Hall of Fame and Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
“We are very pleased to have Denis join Scotiabank Senators Hockey on Sportsnet and Sportsnet One,” said Jim Steel, Senators Vice-President of Broadcast. “It was a terrific run with Garry Galley and we appreciate the great work he did for us. To be able to fill the void with a Hall of Famer, who grew up in the area and has the amount of broadcast experience Denis has, is extremely gratifying.”
Potvin’s broadcasting career is highlighted from his work as the analyst for the Florida Panthers television broadcasts from the team’s inception in 1993 through the 2008-2009 NHL season. His recent work included being a studio analyst for the NHL Network’s signature show "On The Fly" and served as a regular analyst on XM Radio’s "NHL Home Ice" morning show.
Rogers Sportsnet East will broadcast 40 Senators games this season with Rogers Sportsnet ONE carrying 12. Sportsnet ONE subscribers will watch Senators games on its companion channel, Sportsnet Sens.
