The Detroit Red Wings have honoured the memory of Matthew Wuest by renaming its prospect tournament trophy after the late reporter and CapGeek founder.

The Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup will be awarded to the winner of the Traverse City NHL Prospect Tournament, which is held in September and features prospects from the Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, and St. Louis Blues.

Wuest, in addition to running the popular salary cap website, worked as a reporter with Halifax’s Metro News. He ran a Red Wings prospect site, RedWingsCentral.com from 2001-2014.

Wuest passed away in March 2015 at the age of 35 after a battle with colon cancer. CapGeek ceased operations in early 2015.

The 17th annual prospect tournament, hosted by Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Michigan, is set to run September 11 to 15.
