Richard Peddie, the man who helped build Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment into a business empire, but one without a championship in years, could soon be stepping down.
The Fan590’s Greg Brady reported Wednesday that MLSE is searching for a replacement for Peddie, the president and CEO of Toronto’s sports behemoth. MLSE owns the NHL’s Maple Leafs, NBA’s Raptors, AHL’s Marlies and the Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, as well as LeafsTV and RaptorsTV and numerous business enterprises such as condominiums.
Peddie has held the post since 1998 after two years as president of the Raptors.
Peddie would not confirm or deny the speculation, but told Sportsnet’s John Shannon in an e-mail: “This January I turn 64 so I understand the speculation. No doubt retirement is approaching. At some point in the future I will work out the details with the board and announce the date.”
The Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup in 1967, while none of the Raptors, Marlies or FC have ever won a championship in their respective leagues.
