Phaneuf, Turris, Neil named 2016-17 Senators alternate captains

The extreme reaction to the hit on Clarke MacArthur in training camp shows how much players value him in the dressing room.

The Ottawa Senators announced the supporting cast of their leadership group led by captain Erik Karlsson on Tuesday.

Forward Kyle Turris and defenceman Dion Phaneuf were named alternate captains, and will split the role based on home and away games. Chris Neil will remain an alternate, and will wear the A for all games.

Phaneuf served as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs for six seasons and was dealt to the Senators in a blockbuster nine-player trade in February. The blueliner was honoured with an Ottawa A prior to the Senators’ first game in Toronto following the trade.
