Scoring is down in the NHL and it can be attributed to many things, one of which is the quality of goaltending we’re seeing.
With that in mind, we rank the 10 best goalies so far this season.
1. Henrik Lundqvist – He has the most wins, best goals-against, best save percentage and has faced more shots than any goalie. With Price on the shelf, King Henrik has established himself as the class of the league.
2. Carey Price – Prior to two straight losses to the Canucks and Oilers then his injury, the reigning Hart and Vezina winner was on track to repeat based on his numbers through his first seven starts.
3. Marc-Andre Fleury – The veteran is getting no help from his teammates but he keeps the Penguins in close games with efforts like this.
4. Jake Allen – The 25-year-old has established himself as the clear cut starter in St. Louis. He is second only to Lundqvist when it comes to GAA and save percentage.
5. Cory Schneider – He is far and away the best player on his team, but because he plays in New Jersey his talents are often overlooked.
6. Braden Holtby – When the Capitals selected Holtby in the fourth round in 2008, it’s unlikely they expected him to develop into one of the NHL’s best netminders, but fortunately for them that’s exactly what has happened.
7. Pekka Rinne – The giant Finn is as steady as they come. He has allowed two or fewer goals in eight of his 13 starts.
8. Jonathan Quick – The two-time Stanley Cup champ typically does his best work in the post-season, but a strong start from him has resulted in the Kings being the top team in the Pacific Division so far.
9. Mike Condon – Starting your career 6-0-2 while filling in for one of the best goalies in the world is nothing short of impressive. Anyone who thought the Habs would take a step back with Price on the shelf were mistaken.
10. Martin Jones – After getting off to a white hot start to the season, Jones has fallen back earth, but he has proven to be worth the first-round pick the Sharks gave up to get him in the summer.
