The Toronto Maple Leafs placed forward Brandon Kozun on waivers Wednesday.
If Kozun clears waivers it’s expected he will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.
After earning a spot on the Leafs roster following a strong showing throughout training camp, Kozun registered one assist in five games to start the season before suffering a high-ankle sprain on Oct. 17. The 24-year-old has been a healthy scratch in four of five games since returning to the Leafs roster earlier this month.
With Roman Polak nearing a return to the lineup after a missing nearly a month with a knee injury, the Leafs needed to make a roster move to make room for the physical defenceman.
The Leafs visit the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday. Since their infamous 9-2 drubbing at the hands of the Nashville Predators on Nov. 18, the Leafs have gone 10-1-1 and are on a six-game winning streak.
