Watch: Maple Leafs honour Gord Downie in pre-game tribute

Watch as the Air Canada Centre and Toronto Maple Leafs honour The Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie.

The Toronto Maple Leafs paid tribute to the late Gord Downie on Wednesday with a special tribute devoted to the beloved Canadian music icon.

Downie died Tuesday night at age 53 following a battle with glioblastoma, an incurable form of brain cancer.

The Tragically Hip frontman had a special relationship with hockey, with many of the band’s songs centering around the game. Songs like “Fireworks”, and “The Lonely End Of The Rink”, among others, have long been favourites at arenas across the nation.

Bill Barilko’s No. 5 banner that hangs from the Air Canada Centre’s rafters was lowered in honour of Downie and one of his most cherished hockey anthems, “Fifty-Mission Cap.”
