WATCH: New, intense trailer for ‘Red Army’

When Alex Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, Evgeni Malkin and their countrymen soar around NHL rinks, dangling opponents and scoring highlight-reel goals, it looks like they’re having fun.

However, as the new documentary Red Army details, hockey wasn’t always fun for Russian players.

A new trailer for the film was released Wednesday.

Directed by Gary Polsky, Red Army examines how society and culture in the Soviet Union impacted its national hockey team and players, namely captain Viacheslav Fetisov.

Red Army made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in April and was recently shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. The TIFF premiere was attended by NHL luminaries Wayne Gretzky, Scotty Bowman and Darryl Sittler among others.
