ROSEMONT, Ill. _ The Chicago Wolves have brought the Calder Cup back to the Windy City.
Jason Krog scored a hat trick to lift the Wolves to a 5-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Game 6 of the American Hockey League championship series on Tuesday.
With the victory, the Wolves hoisted the Cup for the second time since their inaugural year in the AHL in 2001-02. Chicago was the toast of the league from start to finish, boasting the AHL’s best regular-season record at 53-22-2-3 to earn home-ice advantage throughout the post-season.
Krog took the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP. The 32-year-old finished with 12 goals and 26 assists in the post-season. The honour caps a fantastic season for Krog, who won the regular-season scoring title after leading the AHL in goals (39) and assists (73).
Wolves head coach John Anderson, a former first-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, became the 12th coach to win multiple Calder Cup championships.
Brett Sterling and Nathan Oystrick added goals for Chicago, which finished 16-8 in the playoffs after earlier series wins over Toronto, Milwaukee and Rochester. Ondrej Pavelec made 25 stops in goal to become the fourth goaltender in league history to earn 16 victories in a single post-season.
Mark Ardelan and Luca Caputi had the goals for the Penguins, who got 33 saves from John Curry. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s fate mirrored that of its parent club, the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lost the Stanley Cup final in six games to the Detroit Red Wings.
